Storing the Energy of Tomorrow: The “JOHANN” Hydrogen Project with COSMOS by heiserTEC

How an innovative hydrogen storage solution in Austria makes renewable energy available all year round.

The energy transition requires solutions that think beyond the present moment. A pioneering project in Admont, Austria, demonstrates how renewable energy can not only be generated, but also stored efficiently and made available throughout the entire year.

With the hybrid energy storage system “JOHANN” from Elements Energy, the Agricultural College Grabnerhof and its partners pursue a clear goal: complete energy autonomy based on solar and hydropower. Surplus solar energy is not simply fed into the grid, but converted into green hydrogen – and this is where heiserTEC plays a key role.

The COSMOS high-pressure storage systems from heiserTEC are a central component of the overall solution. They enable the safe storage of hydrogen at approximately 150 bar, creating the basis for seasonal energy storage. Energy generated in summer can thus be reliably used during the winter months. While battery systems bridge short-term fluctuations, hydrogen storage enables long-term availability over entire seasons.

The system integrates an electrolyzer, compressor, hydrogen storage, fuel cell, battery storage and heat pump into a compact, robust and highly efficient solution. The result is a CO₂-free energy system with high reliability – implemented in a real-world, sustainable application.

The new video documents this project in a compelling way: from the initial vision to technical implementation and tangible benefits for the environment, education and the region. It shows how strong partnerships, engineering expertise and advanced storage technology come together – and highlights the role of heiserTEC as a reliable technology partner.

Strategic Focus on the Main Site: Spin-off of Subsidiaries in Poland and Germany

15 July 2025, Kienberg/Gaming, Austria – On July 14, 2025, Hexagon Composites announced its plans to fully acquire the alternative fuels business of SES. This business was part of the Sustainable Energy Solutions (SES) joint venture established in May of last year and includes the sites in Slupsk, Poland, and Burscheid, Germany. The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of the third quarter of the 2025 calendar year.

With Hexagon Composites, a well-established industry player, is taking over the hydrogen and CNG activities, creating a strong foundation for the continued development of these business segments. Worthington Cylinders GmbH in Kienberg thanks all involved teams for their contributions over the past years and looks forward with confidence to the future development of both organizations.

Worthington Cylinders GmbH in Kienberg

For more than two centuries, we have been manufacturing steel cylinders for high-pressure gas storage at our Kienberg site. Every year, we process around 27,000 tons of steel – the equivalent of 2.5 Eiffel Towers.

This spin-off has no impact on our steel cylinder plant in Kienberg. Worthington Cylinders GmbH remains jointly owned (49% Worthington Enterprises, 49% Hexagon Composites ASA, and 2% by the management team in Kienberg).

Through this strategic realignment, we are now able to sharpen our focus and consolidate our strengths – positioning ourselves more strongly in the market for compressed high-pressure gases.

COSMOS Stationary: Sustainable Energy Management with Hydrogen and Photovoltaic Systems

In times of increasing efforts toward sustainability and the expansion of renewable energy sources, efficient energy storage is becoming increasingly important. With our COSMOS Stationary product, we offer a key component for this development.

COSMOS Stationary is a stationary and stackable gas storage bundle, specifically designed for hydrogen storage, but it can also accommodate other industrial gases, such as nitrogen. With various pressure levels and volumes, it can be flexibly adapted to meet the needs of different applications, including hydrogen fueling stations and power-to-gas systems. Particularly noteworthy is the growing importance of this product in connection with photovoltaic (PV) systems.

Efficient Energy Management for PV Systems

As a component of a comprehensive system* for efficient energy management, COSMOS Stationary serves as storage for surplus energy generated by photovoltaic systems. During the summer months, PV systems often produce more electricity than can be consumed immediately. Rather than letting this energy go unused, it can be converted into hydrogen (H₂) via an electrolyzer*. The produced hydrogen can then be stored in our COSMOS Stationary unit. This stored energy can later be used in the sun-scarce winter months, for example, by converting it back into electricity through a fuel cell*.

Such an integrated system* provides homeowners, large-scale clients, and public facilities with PV systems a holistic energy infrastructure, enabling sustainable and independent energy use throughout the year. A successful integration of our COSMOS Stationary in such a system* is demonstrated by our Austrian customer, EEG Elements Energy, which offers tailored and ready-to-use solutions for both private customers and businesses.

Pioneering Advancements

COSMOS Stationary is continuously being developed. With each new order, we gain insight into our customers’ requirements and optimize our production processes accordingly. This includes adapting to specific customer needs, such as providing different pressure ranges within a single storage bundle or the ability to stack individual bundles to meet specific storage needs across various application areas. Through this flexibility, we can offer our customers customized solutions.

With COSMOS Stationary, we have created a solution for stationary energy storage that meets the growing demand for sustainable energy storage while being flexible and adaptable for future challenges.

Another product, specifically designed for mobile applications, is our COSMOS Transportable. This product enables the transport of high-pressure gases, such as hydrogen or other industrial gases, on roads in compliance with EU ADR (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) standards.

Collaboration Accelerates Design and Manufacturing of Compressed Hydrogen Transport Technology

STOKOTA and Worthington Enterprises join capabilities to ramp up production of 20-ft containers

Using hydrogen technologies to decarbonize the mobility sector requires large-scale modifications to vehicle manufacturing and fueling infrastructure. Collaboration can help the transformation to clean mobility achieve sufficient velocity; however, this requires not just heavy capital investment, but also a shift in mindset. Historically, players in the automotive value chain have seen guarding design and production strengths as the only way to hold and expand market share against competitors.

On the hydrogen landscape STOKOTA and Worthington see a different dynamic at work. Shared expertise offers the means to win market share faster on the hydrogen landscape, which still offers ample open real estate. Therefore, the two companies have matched production strengths in the design and assembly of hydrogen transport and storage systems.

For over a decade, Worthington Enterprises has pursued a business strategy to offer the clean-fuel mobility market the capacity needed for hydrogen and CNG onboard fueling systems as wells as the necessary storage, transport, and refueling infrastructure. STOKOTA, a leader in the production of specialized tank vehicles for fuel transport, sees hydrogen transport as the next step in expanding the company’s core competence.

Two years ago, STOKOTA began developing transport solutions for compressed hydrogen. Decision makers started with an analysis of solutions and opportunities available on the market, at the conclusion of which they selected Worthington as a well-suited partner in generating business synergies through long-term cooperation. “Our own strengths in building road-ready, certified tank vehicles coupled with Worthington’s knowhow in designing and producing composite high-pressure cylinders and gas-street components will result in a high-end product – a container for the transportation of compressed hydrogen,” explained Wim De Gendt, CEO STOKOTA.

From the Worthington side, Ekaterina Levitskaia, Product Manager I Gas Containment Systems, added: “The quality and safety record that STOKOTA has in making fuel transport solutions convinced us that a long-term collaboration would bring many mutual benefits and allow both companies to focus on what they’re best at. Our experience in building compressed H2 cylinders and our multi-generational approach to product research and development will contribute to a healthy collaboration for years to come.”

Geography also played a role in combining design and production strengths. STOKOTA has two facilities in Poland near Worthington’s plant in Słupsk, Poland. This will bring the advantage of shortening and securing the supply chain, and help ensure that the companies deliver their first co-produced systems – two 20-foot containers for transporting hydrogen at 380 bar – later this year.

Worthington’s company canteen focuses on sustainability

In November 2023, the Schernhammer family’s restaurant in Kienberg, which also serves as Worthington’s company canteen, launched a remarkable initiative supported by the sustainability department of Worthington Sustainable Energy Solutions’ Kienberg branch. “As a company committed to sustainability, we are fully behind the campaign and are helping to drive it forward! By doing so, we are helping to save unnecessary costs and natural resources, which ultimately benefits the stock market and the environment,” says Sustainability Director Gabriele Zeilerbauer.

To save food from going to waste, a digital and internal Worthington group was created via a text messaging app where Worthington employees can vote on weekdays whether they want to grab a lunch menu, and if so, which of the two daily changing menu options they want. “It works so well that we hardly have any leftovers! And if there are leftovers, I just post them in the group. Then someone usually gets in touch and wants to take the discounted menus,” says Chef Heidi Schernhammer. The project also has a positive impact on human resources. “The group gives us a good overview of how many people will be eating at lunchtime. This allows us to deploy our staff in the best possible way,” adds Service Manager Stefan Schernhammer.

However, the Schernhammer team does not just cater to Worthington at lunchtime, but around the clock. Since taking over the restaurant, the Schernhammers have also taken care of the vending machines at the Worthington site. There is always something to satisfy the small or large appetite, including snacks, candy and beverages. Recently, salads, spreads, bread, sausages, yogurt and fruit have been added to the vending line. In the future, Heidi and Stefan plan to offer complete meals as vending machine contents, such as leftover portions. Freshness is guaranteed because the owners check the vending machines several times a day.

The Hydrogen Rainbow: Production Methods and Environmental Impacts

Hydrogen is playing a central role in the energy transition. But all hydrogen sources are not created equally – some production methods have a larger environmental footprint than others. Nevertheless, as industry and transportation begin to rely on hydrogen more and more, availability of hydrogen is more critical to scaling up than green generation. In this early phase of hydrogen’s career as a mainstream fuel source, decision makers need to use entire spectrum, so that technology development continues at its currently brisk pace. Each color is a positive step forward in establishing a sustainable energy landscape.

What colors does hydrogen come in?

Hydrogen gas itself is colorless and odorless in its natural state. When hydrogen is burned, it produces a pale blue flame, but the gas itself remains colorless.

Why was hydrogen given so many colorful terms?

The colors constitute a system for evaluating hydrogen. Green and the colors near it have the purest means of production and are deemed most desirable. The further away from green the less desirable from a clean energy viewpoint.

Green Hydrogen: A Breath of Fresh Air

Green hydrogen is created using clean electricity from renewable sources like solar or wind power. A special process called electrolysis is used, which splits water into hydrogen and oxygen without producing any pollution.

At the moment, green hydrogen is rare because it costs the most to produce. However, as costs of wind and solar power have become lower, green hydrogen will also become cheaper as production scales up.

Yellow Hydrogen: Harvesting Sunshine

Next to green on the color wheel is yellow, and some experts are using the term to distinguish hydrogen generated using solar power from other renewable energy sources.

Blue Hydrogen: Striking a Balance

Blue hydrogen is primarily produced from natural gas using steam reforming, creating hydrogen and carbon dioxide as a by-product. The term “low-carbon hydrogen” is used for blue hydrogen because, while it doesn’t eliminate greenhouse gas creation during production, it incorporates carbon capture and storage (CCS) to reduce its environmental impact.

Pink Hydrogen: The Nuclear Glow

Pink hydrogen comes about when H2 is produced using electrolysis powered by nuclear energy. Occasionally, this method of production is also called purple or red hydrogen.

Grey Hydrogen: The Current Mainstream

At present, the most widely used method for making hydrogen is grey hydrogen production. Grey hydrogen is formed by processing natural gas, or methane, through steam methane reformation, but it doesn’t capture the greenhouse gases produced during this process. Essentially, grey hydrogen is similar to blue hydrogen but lacks the application of carbon capture and storage.

Black and Brown Hydrogen: Fossil Fuel Hues

By employing black coal or lignite (brown coal) in the hydrogen production process, both black and brown hydrogen represent the opposite end of the environmental spectrum compared to green hydrogen. To complicate matters, hydrogen derived from fossil fuels through the gasification process is sometimes referred to as black or brown hydrogen interchangeably.

Turquoise Hydrogen: A Potential Gem

Turquoise hydrogen is produced by splitting methane through pyrolysis, generating hydrogen and solid carbon. Although currently not prominent, it may become a low-emission option if powered by renewables and with proper carbon management in the future.

White Hydrogen: Underground Mysteries

White hydrogen is a kind of hydrogen that occurs naturally in underground deposits and is formed through a process called fracking. Currently, there are no plans to use this hydrogen.
