How an innovative hydrogen storage solution in Austria makes renewable energy available all year round.
The energy transition requires solutions that think beyond the present moment. A pioneering project in Admont, Austria, demonstrates how renewable energy can not only be generated, but also stored efficiently and made available throughout the entire year.
With the hybrid energy storage system “JOHANN” from Elements Energy, the Agricultural College Grabnerhof and its partners pursue a clear goal: complete energy autonomy based on solar and hydropower. Surplus solar energy is not simply fed into the grid, but converted into green hydrogen – and this is where heiserTEC plays a key role.
The COSMOS high-pressure storage systems from heiserTEC are a central component of the overall solution. They enable the safe storage of hydrogen at approximately 150 bar, creating the basis for seasonal energy storage. Energy generated in summer can thus be reliably used during the winter months. While battery systems bridge short-term fluctuations, hydrogen storage enables long-term availability over entire seasons.
The system integrates an electrolyzer, compressor, hydrogen storage, fuel cell, battery storage and heat pump into a compact, robust and highly efficient solution. The result is a CO₂-free energy system with high reliability – implemented in a real-world, sustainable application.
The new video documents this project in a compelling way: from the initial vision to technical implementation and tangible benefits for the environment, education and the region. It shows how strong partnerships, engineering expertise and advanced storage technology come together – and highlights the role of heiserTEC as a reliable technology partner.
COSMOS inside. Powering a sustainable energy future – starting today.
